Levi McKinley- Youth Development Specialist
I started my work at the Boys and Girls Club on February 21st, 2019. When I started, I was the front desk staff. I remember being terrified of the idea of sending the wrong youth with the wrong parent. Once I memorized which student goes to which adult, however, I genuinely enjoyed the front desk position. Getting to just say hello and be a positive person for students and parents was fun, but eventually, I developed a strong desire to be on the floor and do activities with the club members.
One of my favorite days of work to date was the day my manager announced that the staff was going to change groups. I remember gleefully looking at the paper that said that I was being moved to second grade. I would later be moved to my personal favorite age group, kindergarten, and I have genuinely enjoyed every minute. I now work with fourth grade, and while I admit that I have had to grow a lot in order to be an effective staff member with them, I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to improve with age groups that I am not used to.
When I am not at school or work, I enjoy being a part of my school’s chamber choir, drumline, and oral interpretation team. I am active in my church, drumming for our worship team, and helping teach the children’s ministry. One of my favorite things to do in my free time is to simply listen to music while doing something easy, like walking or driving with people. This fall I will be going to SDSU to study biology. Once I am done, I hope to go to vet school and one day own a veterinarian clinic.
I thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to work at the Boys and Girls Club, and I am forever grateful for the experiences and skills that it has given me. I love working with kids every day, and I will genuinely miss them and the club so much in five months.

In the fall of 2017, I decided I needed to move on from Fast-Food so I applied here at the Club. I was hired and then assigned to the third grade group, and those poor kids were never able to get rid of me. I would be moved to the 4th & 5th grade after about a year and would follow my first group of kids. Now I am in the Teen group with some of the same kids, I had almost three years ago.
My favorite activities are the slow, relaxed ones like coloring pages and rocks. I can recall several conversations I’ve had with kids while coloring and drawing. Those conversations would build a strong foundation of trust between us. I see those kids now, and I can hardly wait to read about their accomplishments later in life when I’m old.
When I am not here at the club working, I am at the High School working on something for one of the several extra-curriculars I’m associated with. (Choir, Newspaper, Book Club, etc.)
In the rare occasion I do have some free time, I’m usually reading, listening to music, or hanging out with my friends.
I owe a lot to the Boys & Girls Club and all of the opportunities and experiences they have given me in the last few years.
